MOUNTAIN BIKING: Sta Trails

← AK FISH CREEK SOLO CREEK NEAR CHATANIKA AK Single Tracks →

Description

These 8 miles of amazing single track were built by the Anchorage Single Track Advocates on city park land and the trails are named for the lady who spearheaded the project, (Janice, who goes by "Queen Bee" on the local biking message board, hence the name thyme). There are 7 new trails in the network with two older trails running through them all (the Llama Trail the Gas Line).

You start off by entering the Drone Lane, going up this is a steep climb with a couple switch backs. Coming down, watch out, it's fast with banked curves and plenty of little hills to catch air.

Queen Bee Loop is a fun and challenging trail in either direction, this loop will take you up further to the main network.

The outer trails (Janice's Jive and The Hive) in this network are rated as Intermediate level trails which are full of roots, long up hills, short and steep climbs and banked curves. Though they are rated as intermediate trails, going up is a challenge for most.

The inter trails (Yellow Jacket, Stinger and the Hornet's Nest) are rated as Advanced level trails. These trails are loaded with fast downhill section, jumps, banked curves and technical climbs and root sections.

With all trails, these trails should be ridden with your skill set in mind; they are multi-directional with blind curves which means you may have to stop suddenly for oncoming traffic, so watch your speed to help prevent skidding and tearing up these great trails!

Directions

Take Abbott to the Hilltop Ski area just past Service High School. You can park in the lot by the road and ride to the trail head, it’s only about ¼ mile from the parking lot. Ride like you are going back to the Ski area (the ski area gates close at 8pm), turn into the first gravel road on your right (it’s blocked off to car traffic), you’ll see a small sign strait a head of you, that’s the start to the Dome Lane and the STA trails.
